Health alert: Leptospirosis cases triple in the Dominican Republic during 2026
The Dominican Republic faces a complex health landscape regarding leptospirosis. According to data collected up to Epidemiological Week 30 of this year, the country has recorded a total of 260 confirmed cases, a figure significantly higher than the 93 reported in the same period of 2025.
Although the statistics reflect an increase that almost triples the records of the previous year, the most recent reports from the Ministry of Public Health indicate a downward trend in notifications during the most recent weeks, maintaining control over the spread of this bacterial pathology.
Disease behavior in 2026
The epidemiological analysis highlights that the period of highest incidence occurred during the second quarter of the year. Between the months of April, May, and June, a critical spike was observed, reaching its peak near week 19, when more than 25 confirmed cases were exceeded in a single weekly cutoff.
After reaching that peak, the contagion curve began to descend progressively. By Epidemiological Week 30, authorities only reported two new cases, both located in the Santo Domingo province, which suggests a stabilization in the transmission of the disease.
What is leptospirosis and how to prevent it?
Leptospirosis is a condition caused by the Leptospira bacteria. Its spread occurs mainly through direct contact with water, moist soil, or surfaces that have been contaminated with the urine of infected animals, with rodents being the main vectors of transmission.
It is essential that the public maintains hygiene and prevention measures, avoiding contact with stagnant water or areas with a high presence of rodents to reduce the risk of contagion.

Because initial symptoms can be confused with other common infections, health authorities reiterate the importance of going to health centers at any sign of suspicion, especially in communities vulnerable to flooding or with deficiencies in waste management, factors that favor the proliferation of the bacteria.
