Kelvin Cruz drives sports transformation in the South with 200 million investment
The Minister of Sports, Kelvin Cruz, has launched an ambitious infrastructure project that seeks to renew the sports landscape in the Southern Region of the Dominican Republic. With a total investment of 200 million pesos, the plan includes the construction of seven modern multipurpose centers in the provinces of Barahona, Elías Piña, and Independencia.
This initiative responds to a national strategy to provide municipalities with dignified and safe spaces, promoting sports practice and social integration for children, youth, and adults in areas that have historically demanded better conditions for physical and recreational development.
Distribution of the works
- Barahona: Roofs will be built in El Peñón, Jaquimeyes, and Fundación, with an investment of RD$90,507,896.17.
- Elías Piña: The municipalities of Pedro Santana and Juan Santiago will receive new facilities with a budget of RD$43,670,720.75.
- Independencia: La Descubierta and Cristóbal will have modern sports centers through an investment of RD$63,054,560.84.
Today we are doing justice to the Southern Region, simultaneously initiating seven multipurpose roofed facilities. This tour responds to a directive from President Luis Abinader, with whom we have been promoting works to transform the territories. Starting today, the accumulated social debt with the South begins to change.

Technology and modernization at the service of the athlete
Beyond physical construction, these projects integrate international standards to ensure quality in sports practice. The facilities will feature cutting-edge technical characteristics, among which stand out:
- High-resistance synthetic flooring courts.
- Professional supports and backboards meeting FIBA specifications.
- Digital scoreboards and timing systems with 24-second shot clocks.
- Complementary areas such as offices, restrooms, locker rooms, cafeterias, and landscaped outdoor zones.
The Ministry of Sports reaffirms its commitment to ensuring that every municipality in the country has at least one multipurpose space, using sports as an essential tool for training, family well-being, and the economic dynamism of the beneficiary communities.
