International Dengue Day: keys to prevention and control
Every August 26th, International Dengue Day is commemorated, a fundamental date to raise awareness in society about the prevention of this viral disease transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito. Alofoke Deportes joins this call to attention, reminding everyone that health is an essential pillar for the well-being of our community and the physical performance of all.
Dengue represents a global health challenge, with estimates indicating that nearly a third of the world’s population lives in at-risk areas. Common symptoms include high fever, intense headaches, and general malaise. In critical scenarios, the virus can lead to hemorrhagic complications that seriously compromise the patient’s life.
Prevention as the main focus
The most effective strategy to curb the spread of dengue is to break the life cycle of the transmitting mosquito. Health authorities emphasize that eliminating breeding sites is a shared responsibility. To achieve this, it is recommended to follow these basic measures:
- Avoid the accumulation of stagnant water in containers, both inside and outside the home.
- Inspect small objects, such as bottle caps, where the mosquito can lay its eggs.
- Dispose of unused tires or any container that could become a breeding ground.
- Keep environments clean and clear to hinder the proliferation of the insect.
Prevention begins at home. Simple actions, such as turning over containers that collect water and keeping our spaces tidy, are the most effective shield to protect our families and communities against dengue.

In the local context, Public Health authorities maintain constant monitoring of registered cases. Epidemiological surveillance is key, but success in eradicating the virus depends, to a large extent, on the consistency of each citizen in cleaning and prevention efforts in their daily environments.
