Tragedy in Nepal: Flash flood leaves at least 16 dead and hundreds missing
A devastating flash flood has struck several locations near the border between Nepal and Tibet, triggering a humanitarian emergency of great proportions. According to official reports, at least 16 people have lost their lives, while search efforts intensify amid uncertainty regarding the whereabouts of hundreds of pilgrims.
The incident, which occurred on Wednesday morning in the Rasuwa district, has caused severe structural damage to roads, markets, and hydroelectric projects, leaving one of the region’s most important land routes cut off.
Pilgrims on alert
The main concern focuses on a group of 390 pilgrims who were participating in the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, a sacred journey that annually attracts thousands of Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain devotees. Local authorities reported that contact has been lost with this group, composed mostly of Indian citizens, while they were attempting to cross into Tibetan territory.
It is difficult to assess the damage at this moment, but it is possible that both the damage and the number of casualties are considerable.

Rescue operation underway
Given the magnitude of the catastrophe, the deployment of emergency teams has been massive. Key actions include:
- Deployment of six Nepalese Army helicopters and eight private company aircraft for rescue and evacuation tasks.
- Mobilization of security forces in the most affected areas, specifically in the towns of Timure, Rasuwagadhi, and Syabrubesi.
- Coordination of search teams to locate individuals who remain out of contact following the flooding of the Bhote Koshi River.
The sudden flow of water, which reached its critical point near 9:15 local time, caught local communities and travelers by surprise, complicating assistance efforts due to the destruction of road infrastructure. Authorities are maintaining active efforts to determine the full extent of this natural disaster and provide support to those affected.
