Human Rights Commission to offer free legal assistance to low-income victims
Manuel María Mercedes, president of the Human Rights Commission, announced an important initiative aimed at strengthening access to justice in the country. During his speech on the RD Debate program, the head announced that the institution will provide free legal representation to those individuals who, due to their socioeconomic situation, do not have the resources to hire a private lawyer.
This announcement comes in a context of intense national debate regarding the role of human rights advocacy organizations in relation to victims of crime. Faced with questions about their responsiveness, Mercedes clarified that the entity works constantly on behalf of those who have suffered a crime, although she conditioned the scope of its actions on the organization’s availability of resources.
