Escalation of tension: Houthi rebels launch attacks against Riyadh and Aramco refineries
Yemen’s Houthi rebels have confirmed the execution of a series of large-scale military operations against strategic targets in Saudi Arabia. The offensive, which included the deployment of ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones, reached the capital, Riyadh, and the facilities of the state-owned oil company Aramco located on the country’s western coast.
Witnesses in the Saudi capital reported explosions and the formation of a dense column of black smoke in the vicinity of King Khalid International Airport. For his part, Yahya Sari, a military spokesman for the Houthis, detailed that the actions focused on key points in Riyadh and the Yanbu port terminal, where large-scale fires were recorded following the impacts.
Strategic impact on the energy sector
The attack on the Yanbu facilities represents a direct blow to Saudi Arabia’s crude oil export infrastructure. This terminal has become critically important for the kingdom, especially given the logistical complications in the region and the need to maintain the flow of hydrocarbons to international markets via the Red Sea.
The Yemeni insurgency maintains that its operations are a direct response to the actions of the Riyadh-led military coalition, categorically denying any attempt to attack civilian targets or holy sites such as Mecca.
Territorial control and justification of the conflict
This offensive comes just a week after the rebels consolidated their control over more than 130 kilometers of territory in Yemen, including vital points such as the port of Mocha and the island of Mayun. These positions grant the Houthis superior tactical capability over the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, an essential maritime route through which nearly 30% of global container traffic and a significant portion of the global oil supply flows.
- The Houthis assert that they will maintain their military response until the coalition’s intervention in Yemen ceases.
- The military spokesperson described Riyadh’s accusations regarding attempted attacks on the holy city of Mecca as propaganda.
- The international coalition continues to support the Government of Yemen in a conflict that keeps regional stability on edge.
The situation on the Arabian Peninsula remains under international observation, as Saudi defense systems attempt to mitigate constant aerial threats in a conflict that appears to be intensifying on the energy and territorial fronts.
