Dominican Republic joins the Geneva Consensus: A key step in the diplomatic agenda

The United States Ambassador to the Dominican Republic, Leah Campos, formalized the country’s accession to the Geneva Consensus, becoming the 43rd member of this international coalition. The diplomat highlighted this milestone as the beginning of a series of strategic collaborations that she hopes to finalize together with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ito Bisonó.

During a special reception held to commemorate this admission, Campos highlighted the role of the United States as a founding member and current secretariat of the initiative. The ambassador reiterated her commitment to strengthening bilateral ties through new agreements that reflect the shared values between both nations.

Defense of values and family

In her speech, Campos reaffirmed her stance against abortion, highlighting the work of various Dominican organizations and religious groups that have worked for years in the defense of life and the family unit. The U.S. representative was emphatic in criticizing multilateral organizations and political sectors that, in her view, have attempted to promote policies opposed to these principles on Dominican soil.

The diplomat compared the struggle of the Dominican pro-life sectors to the biblical story of David versus Goliath, highlighting that, despite external pressures, these groups have managed to remain firm and emerge victorious in the protection of their convictions.

Legislative context and diplomatic agenda

The ambassador recalled that her interest in the Dominican stance regarding life began even before assuming her position, after reading articles about the country’s firm position on this matter while she was in Washington. Likewise, she referred to the vote on the Penal Code in the Chamber of Deputies on July 31, 2025, where the legislative piece obtained majority support of 159 votes in favor against four against, reflecting the sentiment of the national legislature.

Following his arrival in Santo Domingo in November, Campos organized a meeting at his residence with various representatives of civil society linked to the defense of the family. The main objective was to recognize their work and formally present the scope of the Geneva Consensus, including a letter sent by President Donald Trump following the United States’ reincorporation into this body.

The event also served to highlight the contribution of Bethany Cosma, who traveled from Washington to support the initiative, receiving special thanks from the ambassador for her leadership and commitment to the principles that underpin this international declaration.
