Bill promoted to declare sports tourism as a national priority in the DR

The Dominican Association of Sports Tourism (ADOTURD) has taken a significant step toward strengthening the sector following the formal filing of a bill in the Senate of the Republic. The initiative, presented by the senator for San Cristóbal, Gustavo Lara Salazar, seeks to elevate sports tourism to the status of a national priority, with the goal of boosting the country’s competitiveness in this field.

The document, submitted on October 14th, has been referred to the Standing Committee on Sports for its technical and legislative evaluation. Among the fundamental pillars of this proposal is the creation of the National Council for Sports Tourism Development (CONDETUDE), an entity that will serve as a strategic bridge between the State, the private sector, and the national sports movement.

Objectives and benefits of the proposal

The project not only seeks to attract world-class events, but also to establish a clear roadmap for the economic growth of the communities. According to the proponents, the law does not imply the creation of new taxes or additional budgetary commitments, focusing on the optimization of existing resources.

  • Creation of a National Sports Tourism Strategy for the planned development of the sector.
  • Implementation of a single-window system to streamline bureaucratic procedures for investors.
  • Development of a national registry of entities linked to this industry.
  • Establishment of mechanisms to incentivize sports sponsorship.
  • Generation of accurate statistics to measure the real economic impact on the country.

The Dominican Republic has the conditions to become a benchmark destination for sports tourism. With this proposal, we seek to establish a State policy that allows for planning the development of the sector, attracting international events, and expanding its benefits throughout the national territory.

The drafting and review of the document involved the participation of lawyer Juliana Ramia, a member of the ADOTURD Advisory Council. For his part, Senator Gustavo Lara Salazar highlighted that the legislative piece provides the necessary coordination framework for sports tourism to be a planned and participatory activity, allowing Congress to evaluate the ideal tools for its expansion.

ADOTURD has expressed its full willingness to collaborate with the Legislative Branch during the study process, reaffirming that the private sector will be a key player in the formulation and monitoring of these public policies. The organization is confident that this law will be the necessary catalyst to position the Dominican Republic as a global benchmark in the organization of sporting events.
