Hiroshi Okuda, the visionary who drove Toyota’s global expansion, passes away
The automotive sector is in mourning following the passing of Hiroshi Okuda, who was a key figure in Toyota’s history. The executive, who led the company between 1995 and 2006, lost his life at 93 years old, as confirmed by the Japanese company.
Okuda, born in 1932 in Mie Prefecture, stood out for an exemplary career within the corporation. After graduating from Hitotsubashi University in Tokyo, he joined the ranks of Toyota in 1955, climbing the ranks until reaching the presidency in 1995. His appointment was a historic milestone, as it broke with the tradition of the leadership being exclusively in the hands of the founding family, the Toyodas.
A legacy of innovation and international expansion
During his eleven-year tenure, Okuda was the architect of fundamental milestones that transformed the automotive industry worldwide. Among his most significant achievements are:
- The Prius era: Under his leadership, Toyota introduced the Prius, establishing itself as the first mass-produced hybrid vehicle, marking a turning point in sustainable mobility.
- Consolidation of Lexus: He boosted the presence of Lexus in the Japanese market, the luxury brand that managed to position itself as a direct rival to the European giants of the premium segment.
- Productive growth: He maintained a firm commitment to job stability while doubling global production capacity, opening strategic plants in the United States and Europe.
Okuda’s vision was decisive for Toyota to surpass competitors like General Motors, laying the foundations for the brand to become the undisputed leader in global sales in subsequent years.
In addition to his administrative prowess, the executive was recognized for his diplomatic skill in mitigating trade frictions between Japan and the United States, a constant challenge during his tenure. His ability to navigate international tensions allowed Toyota to strengthen its presence in key markets, consolidating a legacy that endures to this day in the brand’s hegemony in the global automotive market.
Although his management concluded years before the most recent records, his influence was fundamental for Toyota to reach historic figures, surpassing 11 million vehicles sold in recent years and maintaining its privileged position in the international automotive industry.
