Solidarity in Colombia: Gilinski family allocates 48 million dollars for reconstruction after the earthquake
In a gesture of commitment to the country, the Gilinski family has announced a significant donation of 150 billion pesos, equivalent to about 48 million dollars, destined for the reconstruction of hospitals and schools in Cali. This city has been one of the hardest hit by the recent 7.4 magnitude earthquake that shook Colombia last Monday.
The news was confirmed by the Colombian president, Abelardo de la Espriella, through his official channels. The president detailed that he held a telephone conversation with businessman Jaime Gilinski, who ratified his intention to support the recovery of vital infrastructure in the capital of Valle del Cauca.
Impact of the tragedy in Cali
The situation in Cali remains critical. According to reports provided by the local Mayor’s Office, the balance of damage to infrastructure is considerable:
- 46 buildings have suffered total collapse.
- 35 structures suffered partial collapse.
- 2,391 buildings show significant structural damage.
- 534 buildings have been declared under immediate evacuation order.
A committed business benchmark
Jaime Gilinski, 68 years old and a native of Cali, is recognized as one of the most influential business figures in the region. As the owner of the GNB Sudameris bank and president of Grupo Nutresa, his contribution reinforces the collective effort led by the Colombian private sector.
All my gratitude and recognition to the Gilinski family for this extraordinary gesture of solidarity with Colombia. In the most difficult moments, the best citizens are known.
Abelardo de la Espriella, President of Colombia
This contribution adds to the national mobilization that, to date, has managed to raise more than 200 billion pesos (approximately 64 million dollars) from various business associations to address the emergency.
Official emergency balance
The National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD) has shared the most recent report on the natural disaster, which reflects the magnitude of the damage caused by the earthquake:
