Gianni Infantino arrives in the Dominican Republic to boost the development of football

The president of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA), Gianni Infantino, arrived this Friday in the Dominican Republic on a strategic visit aimed at strengthening ties with local soccer and projecting the growth of this sport on Dominican soil.

Upon his arrival at Punta Cana Airport, the head of world football was welcomed by the Minister of Sports, Kelvin Cruz, together with the president of the Dominican Football Federation, the president of the Dominican Olympic Committee, Luisín Mejía, and other government and sports authorities.

Dialogue with President Luis Abinader

During the reception, a telephone conversation took place between Infantino and the President of the Republic, Luis Abinader, who extended a warm welcome to the executive. The Dominican leader expressed his willingness to maintain close ties with the international organization to collaborate on initiatives that benefit national sports.

I already feel it as my country. You had told me that when we met, that upon coming here I would immediately feel like I was in my own country, and it is, the truth is it is like that. You have a Dominican as FIFA president.

For his part, President Abinader reaffirmed the Dominican State’s commitment to sports development, noting that the country is fully prepared to work hand-in-hand with FIFA to execute projects necessary for the advancement of the discipline.

Commitment to Dominican soccer

Infantino’s agenda in the country has as its main axes the institutional strengthening of the local federation and the promotion of infrastructure projects, technical training programs, and strategies for the popularization of soccer throughout the national territory.

This meeting sets an important precedent for Dominican sports, having the direct backing of FIFA. The authorities present agreed that the visit is a fundamental step toward raising the competitive and organizational level of soccer in the Dominican Republic.
