Fuerza del Pueblo questions official figures on citizen security in the Dominican Republic

The People’s Force (FP) has expressed its firm disagreement with the citizen security statistics presented by the Government, pointing out concerning inconsistencies in the methodology used by official agencies to measure the homicide rate in the country. Josefina Reynoso, the organization’s Secretary of Citizen Security, described the figures as unreliable and far removed from the reality perceived by the population on the streets.

Reynoso questioned the veracity of government data and criticized the new Comprehensive Security Strategic Plan, considering it the seventh failed attempt by the current administration to control crime. According to the leader, the Government is trying to project a landscape of tranquility that is not reflected in the day-to-day lives of citizens.

Once again, the Ministry is lying to the country. It tries to sell itself figures that no one buys in the streets or in the neighborhoods. People are tired of so many lies, and insecurity is not solved with fairy tales or headlines.

Inconsistencies in crime indicators

The FP Security Observatory detected significant discrepancies in the reports corresponding to the year 2025. While the Joint Task Force reported a cumulative rate of 8.15 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants, other official reports released at the end of that same year indicated rates of 7.96 and 8.01, evidencing a lack of consistency in the official data.

  • Differences in homicide records based on cutoff dates.
  • Variations in crime classification, including social conflicts and criminal actions.
  • Discrepancies in reports on firearm seizures between different institutions.

Challenges in police reform

Beyond the figures, the opposition stressed that police reform faces critical structural obstacles. According to data handled by the Fuerza del Pueblo, the situation in the police stations is precarious:

  • More than 75% of detachments lack computer equipment to process complaints.
  • Nearly 93% of police officers do not have body cameras for the performance of their duties.

Reynoso emphasized that the country needs sustainable actions over time, rather than a succession of strategic plans that, in his view, fail to positively impact the safety of the common citizen.

Proposal for a national pact

Given this scenario, the People’s Force reiterated the urgent need to reach a national pact on citizen security, an initiative promoted by former President Leonel Fernández. The organization maintains that the guarantee of social peace must be a joint effort and not a simple task of government communication.

In contrast, authorities maintain that their efforts have borne fruit. According to the Joint Task Force report of September 10, 2026, the homicide rate stood at 7.39 per 100,000 inhabitants, marking a reduction compared to the 8.74 record obtained during the same period of the previous year.
