Aurelio Valdez Alcántara faces preliminary hearing for alleged bribery and money laundering
This Monday marks a turning point in the judicial process against former prosecutor Aurelio Valdez Alcántara. The First Instruction Court of the National District has begun the preliminary hearing against him, where the Public Prosecutor’s Office seeks to formalize the referral to a substantive trial of the former official for his alleged involvement in a bribery and money laundering network.
The case, which has generated great expectation, is linked to the investigations into the embezzlement perpetrated against the National Health Insurance (SeNaSa). The judicial proceeding is presided over by Judge Raymundo Mejía, who assumed jurisdiction over the file once Valdez Alcántara lost his privileged jurisdiction after submitting his resignation to the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
Accusation details

- Alleged extortion: It is alleged that Valdez Alcántara requested the sum of 10,000 dollars from Roberto Canaán, who is also under investigation in the SeNaSa case.

- Change of jurisdiction: Following the defendant’s resignation, the Court of Appeals of the National District declined the case to the ordinary justice system, allowing the process to continue under the rules of common law.
