Dominican Republic makes history: Historic silver at the U15 Baseball World Cup
Dominican baseball continues to demonstrate its dominance in the formative categories. The national team in the U15 category achieved an unprecedented feat in Mérida, Mexico, by winning the silver medal at the Baseball World Cup, marking the first time the country has reached the podium in this international tournament.
After an intense title dispute against the United States team, who took home the gold medal, the Dominican team consolidated itself as the second best in the world. The podium was completed by the Japanese national team, which secured the bronze after defeating Mexico with a score of 8-6.
A journey of self-improvement
This runner-up finish not only represents a medal, but a remarkable evolution for the Dominican program. In previous editions, the team had achieved sixth place in Panama 2018 and seventh place in Colombia 2024. This leap in quality in Mexico 2026 ratifies the emerging talent being developed from the grassroots level in the Dominican Republic.
The national team’s performance was resounding, closing their participation with a total record of six wins and three losses. The path to the final was marked by memorable performances:
- 7-1 triumph against Japan in the opening round.
- Lopsided victories against Cuba (14-4), Germany (14-4), and South Africa (28-0).
- 11-4 triumph over Chinese Taipei in the super round.
- 14-7 victory against Nicaragua.
The silver medal represents the Dominican Republic’s first podium in the history of this competition and marks its best result in the U15 category.
Before reaching the decisive game, the Dominican team showed an implacable offense, managing to score 95 runs and allowing just 30 in their first eight matches. Although the final duel against the United States did not favor the Dominicans, the overall balance of this U15 World Cup is extremely positive, making it clear that the future of baseball in the Dominican Republic enjoys enviable health.
