World Forest Fire Prevention Day: A call to environmental awareness
Every August 18th, the world unites to commemorate World Forest Fire Prevention Day. The fundamental purpose of this date is to raise awareness in society about the critical importance of preserving our forest ecosystems, promoting safety measures that prevent natural disasters that affect the planet’s balance.
Why do forest fires occur?
The phenomenon of forest fires is complex and multi-causal. Currently, climate change plays a decisive role, as the constant increase in global temperatures creates conditions of extreme dryness in organic matter, turning forests into environments highly vulnerable to ignition and the spread of fire.
Natural factors versus human activity
While there are natural causes, such as lightning strikes during thunderstorms, statistics show that the incidence of these events has grown exponentially in the last century due, in large part, to human intervention. These causes are divided into:
- Natural causes: Extreme weather conditions, such as strong winds, low humidity, and prolonged periods of drought, which not only cause the fire but also hinder extinction efforts.
- Anthropogenic causes: Human actions, both accidental and intentional. Among them are the abandonment of glass objects, throwing lit cigarettes in green areas, and the improper handling of campfires.
- Agricultural practices: The burns used to prepare crop soils remain one of the most persistent threats to biodiversity when carried out without the necessary controls.
The preservation of our forests is a shared responsibility. Prevention is the most effective tool to avoid irreparable damage to our natural environment.
