Health alert in the United States: Deaths from “flesh-eating” bacteria on the rise
Concern is growing on the U.S. Gulf Coast after it was confirmed that deaths caused by the Vibrio vulnificus bacteria have risen to seven so far this year. Recently, five deaths were recorded in Louisiana and a new fatality in Florida, which has led health authorities to issue an urgent warning to citizens.
Critical situation in Louisiana and Florida
The Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) has reported an alarming scenario with nine infected patients. All those affected required hospitalization, resulting in five deaths, a figure that significantly exceeds the historical average for this season. Meanwhile, in Florida, where the first fatal case of the year was documented on July 30 in Palm Beach, authorities have confirmed a new death in Marion County, bringing the total number of cases to 14 in the state.
Prevention measures and risks
Health experts point out that the risk increases significantly between the months of May and October, a period in which water temperatures are higher, favoring the proliferation of the bacteria. The main identified routes of transmission include:
- Exposure of open wounds to direct contact with seawater.
- Consumption of raw shellfish, especially oysters.
People with severe infections may require intensive care or limb amputation. About one in five people with a Vibrio vulnificus infection dies, sometimes within a day or two of becoming ill.

The bacteria, popularly known as “flesh-eating” due to its ability to cause severe skin lesions and blisters, also manifests through symptoms such as fever, chills, hypotension, watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, and vomiting.
A public health problem with long-term projection
Nationwide, between 150 and 200 cases of this bacterium are recorded annually, primarily affecting regions near the Gulf of Mexico. However, the projections are concerning: studies suggest that, due to the sustained increase in marine temperatures, annual cases could rise by up to 50% by the year 2090. This phenomenon represents not only a health challenge but also an estimated economic impact of 6.1 billion dollars for the country.
