Russia pays tribute to Fidel Castro in the framework of his centenary
In an emotional ceremony held in Moscow, hundreds of citizens gathered before the statue of Fidel Castro to commemorate the centenary of the birth of the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution. The event, charged with symbolism and nostalgia, featured the presence of Cuban flags and floral offerings in honor of one of the most influential figures of the 20th century.
The leader of the Communist Party of Russia, Gennady Zyuganov, led the tribute, highlighting Castro’s figure as a benchmark of resistance. During his speech, he emphasized how the Cuban leader managed to overcome the pressures of various U.S. administrations over the decades, describing him as an example of struggle and victory in the face of political adversity.
Castro will always be one of the clearest symbols of our time, a figure of truly global scale. He was a convinced supporter of a new multipolar world order.
Sergei Ryabkov, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister
Strategic alliance and rejection of the blockade
For his part, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov reaffirmed the strength of the strategic alliance between Havana and Moscow. The Russian official took the opportunity to once again condemn the economic blockade imposed by the United States on the island, describing the restrictive measures as a sign of impotence in the face of the unwavering will of the Cuban people.
The commemoration included cultural moments, where iconic musical pieces such as ‘El necio’, by Silvio Rodríguez, were performed in an atmosphere that recalled the historical ties between both nations. It should be noted that, although Fidel Castro requested during his lifetime that no monuments be erected in his honor, the statue in Moscow remains an exceptional symbol of the bilateral relationship, similar to the few existing sculptures in countries such as Nicaragua, Mexico, Venezuela, Vietnam, and South Africa.
Ongoing cooperation
- Russia maintains its stance of rejection toward the trade embargo that has affected the island for nearly seven decades.
- Energy cooperation has been a fundamental pillar in the recent relationship, evidenced by the shipment of Russian oil cargoes to mitigate the crisis in Cuba.
- The ceremony reaffirmed Moscow’s commitment as a key commercial and political partner for Havana in the current geopolitical scenario.
The ceremony concluded with the laying of floral offerings by the authorities present, sealing an event that reinforces the relevance of Fidel Castro’s legacy in Russian foreign policy and the continuity of a collaboration that transcends the years of the Cold War.
