Extreme heat and rain forecast for the weekend in the Dominican Republic

The Dominican Institute of Meteorology (Indomet) has reported that high temperatures will continue to be a prominent feature throughout this weekend across the national territory. In Greater Santo Domingo, maximum values are expected to range between 34 and 36 degrees Celsius, maintaining a hot environment that requires caution from the public.

Given this climatic outlook, authorities have reiterated the importance of maintaining constant hydration and avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun during hours of peak radiation to prevent heatstroke.

Distribution of precipitation

Although heat will prevail, rainy activity is expected on Saturday that could offer a momentary relief in the thermal sensation of the affected areas. The precipitation will be concentrated mainly in the following areas:

  • Northern part of Greater Santo Domingo.
  • Inland provinces such as Monte Plata, Sánchez Ramírez, Monseñor Nouel, and La Vega.
  • Specific areas of Azua, San Juan, Elías Piña, Santiago, Santiago Rodríguez, and Dajabón.

In the rest of the country, a slightly hazy sky is expected due to the presence of Saharan dust particles, although in minimal concentrations that will not pose a major impact over the coming days.

The rainfall forecast for Saturday could contribute to momentarily decreasing the heat index in the areas where it occurs.

Tropical wave tracking

Looking ahead to the start of next week, Alofoke Deportes highlights the monitoring of an active tropical wave associated with the remnants of former tropical storm Dolly. This meteorological system has the potential to generate significant rainfall across much of the country between Monday and Tuesday.

Preliminary projections suggest rainfall accumulations of between 50 and 75 millimeters, with the possibility of reaching higher figures in isolated spots. Indomet experts will continue to monitor the evolution of this phenomenon to offer more precise details as it approaches Dominican territory.
