Leones del Escogido shut out the Toros in a pitching duel
In a matchup marked by dominance from the mound, the Leones del Escogido defeated the Toros del Este 2-0 at the Estadio Quisqueya Juan Marichal. With this result, the scarlet team managed to balance their season record, reaching a 3-4 mark, tying precisely with the La Romana team in the standings.
The outcome in the final stretch
The match remained close for most of the way until, in the eighth inning, Jonathan Guzmán played the hero. With a crucial single to right field, Guzmán drove in John Gil, who was pinch-running for Andy Ibáñez, breaking the initial tie. Shortly after, the red offense capitalized on an execution play when Vidal Bruján laid down a bunt that allowed Michael De la Cruz to reach home plate from third base, thus sealing the final score.
The pitching performance was the fundamental pillar of the victory, allowing the team to remain calm until finding the opportune moment to attack.
Absolute dominance of scarlet pitching
The Leones’ pitching staff gave a masterclass in control. Radhamés Liz started the day with a solid four-inning performance, allowing just two hits and issuing one walk with two strikeouts. Subsequently, the bullpen took charge of silencing the visiting bats:
- Juan Mercedes, Patrick Halligan, Kelly Austin, Alex Colomé, and Robinson Martínez combined to retire 13 of the last 14 batters faced.
- Alex Colomé earned the win in relief, while Phillips Valdez took the loss.
- Robinson Martínez managed to close out the game, recording his second save of the season.
Upcoming engagement
The series between both teams continues this Sunday. The Toros del Este will host the Leones del Escogido at the Francisco A. Micheli Stadium, in La Romana, in a clash scheduled to start at 5:00 in the afternoon.
