Government reaches 58,538 homes intervened through the Dominicana se Reconstruye program
The Dominican Government presented a detailed report on the progress of the “Dominicana se Reconstruye” (Dominican Republic Rebuilds) program, a key initiative to improve the quality of life for families in vulnerable conditions. From 2020 to September 2026, the project has managed to intervene in a total of 58,538 homes throughout the national territory.
During the “LA Weekly Agenda” space, led by President Luis Abinader, the results of this strategy, which seeks to transform the housing environment of rural communities and low-income sectors, were announced. The authorities emphasized that the main focus is to dignify homes that present precarious conditions, guaranteeing safer and more resistant structures.
Details of housing interventions
The program’s impact has been reflected in various fundamental adjustments for Dominican families. Among the actions executed are:
- Comprehensive repair of deteriorated roofs and walls.
- Replacement of dirt floors with cement.
- Structural adjustments to improve habitability.
- Construction of units from scratch when the damage was irreparable.
Of the 58,538 homes intervened, some 1,358 had to be built completely from scratch, because the deterioration of the structures made it impossible to carry out a conventional repair.
Addressing the housing deficit in the Dominican Republic
The authorities recalled that, according to official measurements based on 2018 data, the country had a housing deficit of approximately 1.46 million homes. Given this scenario, the Government has designed a multifaceted strategy that is not only limited to the construction of new housing complexes, but also prioritizes the rehabilitation of existing units.
President Luis Abinader reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to this program, emphasizing that housing improvement is an essential pillar within public policies aimed at reducing inequality and strengthening social welfare in the country. This work, which is being carried out in parallel with other housing projects, will continue to be a priority for the government administration in the coming years.
