Link between endometriosis and type 2 diabetes: findings from new research
Recent scientific research has revealed a significant connection between endometriosis and the development of type 2 diabetes. According to the study published in the journal Diabetologia, women diagnosed with endometriosis have a 46% higher risk of suffering from this metabolic condition compared to those who do not have the pathology.
This finding sets an important precedent in medicine, as endometriosis was previously considered exclusively a reproductive health issue. Fuzak Nunziato, lead author of the study and a doctoral student in epidemiology at George Mason University, highlighted that the current results broaden the perspective on how this condition affects women’s overall well-being.
Data analysis and key findings
To reach these conclusions, the research team conducted an exhaustive follow-up over 25 years, analyzing the medical records of nearly 3 million women. The study allowed for the observation of specific patterns in groups that, traditionally, were not classified as high-risk for type 2 diabetes:
- Women whose endometriosis has spread beyond the pelvic region.
- Premenopausal women.
- Patients who do not present with obesity.

Chronic inflammation: a possible determining factor
Although scientists warn that the study identifies a statistical relationship and not a direct causality, the main hypothesis points to chronic inflammation derived from endometriosis as an influential factor. This condition, characterized by the growth of tissue similar to the uterine lining outside the uterus, could be altering internal metabolic processes.
Researchers underscore the importance of conducting further studies to delve deeper into these mechanisms. If these associations are confirmed, the health sector could implement early detection and personalized prevention strategies, significantly improving the quality of life for women with endometriosis and reducing long-term metabolic complications.
