Emilio Prud’Homme: 170 years of the legacy of the author of our National Anthem
This August 20th, the Dominican Republic pays tribute to one of its most illustrious intellectual figures as it commemorates the 170th anniversary of the birth of Emilio Prud’Homme. An educator, lawyer, and poet, his name is etched in national history as the author of the glorious lyrics of our National Anthem, a sacred symbol of Dominican sovereignty.
Born in 1856 in Puerto Plata, Prud’Homme dedicated his life to exalting patriotic values and the academic formation of Dominican youth, leaving an indelible mark that transcends time.
An immortal work for the homeland
The creation of the National Anthem is the milestone that defines Prud’Homme’s career. In 1883, he united his literary talent with the masterful musical composition of José Reyes to give voice to a people’s ideals of freedom. This work was presented for the first time at the Logia Esperanza in Santo Domingo, becoming from then on the anthem that identifies every Dominican.
After years of revisions and adaptations, it was not until May 30, 1934, under Law No. 700, that the country made this composition official as the National Anthem, reaffirming its status as an invariable emblem of our identity.
The National Anthem, whose lyrics belong to Prud’Homme and whose music was composed by José Reyes, continues to be one of the most representative symbols of the Dominican Republic, along with the Flag and the National Coat of Arms.
Educator and shaper of citizens
Beyond his poetic work, Emilio Prud’Homme was a pillar of the Dominican educational system. Under the influence of the prominent educator Eugenio María de Hostos, Prud’Homme became a bulwark of teaching, directing the Normal School of Puerto Plata and promoting the training of new generations with a critical and patriotic approach.
- His commitment to the country led him to hold relevant public offices, including positions such as deputy and secretary of Justice and Public Instruction.
- His pen was always at the service of sovereignty and love for the homeland.

A legacy present in every national event
Although his physical departure occurred on July 21, 1932, the figure of Prud’Homme remains present in every corner of the country. From school classrooms to great sports arenas, where Dominicans proudly sing the notes of the anthem, the spirit of this native of Puerto Plata remains alive.
