Aerial incident: Drone crashes in Romanian territory after crossing the border with Ukraine

Romanian authorities have confirmed that a drone crashed early this Thursday in the north of the city of Tulcea, in the eastern region of the country. The device, whose origin remains under investigation, managed to penetrate Romanian airspace after flying over the border area with Ukraine.

According to the official report issued by the Ministry of Defense, the radar surveillance system detected the device at approximately 2:23 a.m. (local time). Given the presence of this unidentified object, air security protocols were immediately activated.

Rapid response and military deployment

As a preventive measure, two F-18 aircraft belonging to the Spanish Air Force were mobilized to carry out a surveillance mission in the area. In parallel, the Romanian Air Force deployed a reconnaissance helicopter with the objective of monitoring the drone’s trajectory and assessing any potential threat.

The drone entered national territory at 3:21 a.m. about 13 kilometers from Galati, impacting the ground just three minutes later near the town of Grindu.

The impact of the unmanned aerial vehicle caused a small fire in an unpopulated area. Fortunately, the authorities have confirmed that no human casualties or significant material damage were reported in the inhabited areas near the crash site.

Ongoing research

Following the incident, security personnel moved to the scene to cordon off the area and proceed with the recovery of the drone’s remains. The main purpose is to conduct a technical analysis to clarify the exact circumstances under which the device managed to breach Romanian airspace, a highly sensitive issue given the current situation at the Ukrainian border.
