DR vs PR Comedy Show: A historic triumph of Latin comedy in New York

Latin entertainment in the Big Apple experienced an unforgettable day this Saturday, August 15th. The second edition of the “DR vs PR Comedy Show” achieved a full house at the iconic United Palace Theater, gathering more than 3,000 people who came together to celebrate Caribbean culture, humor, and identity. This event solidified its position as one of the most influential and followed offerings by the Hispanic community in the United States.

For more than three hours, the historic Washington Heights venue was transformed into a celebration of laughter, live music, and improvisation. The initiative, conceived by Mr. Nueva Yol at the end of 2024, seeks to exalt the daily experiences, family traditions, and migration challenges shared by Dominicans and Puerto Ricans, transforming a supposed rivalry into a space of cultural unity.

A display of talent and Caribbean energy

The show stood out for its dynamic staging where teams from both countries measured their strength through monologues and sketches. The musical touch was fundamental to keep the energy at its peak: salsa singer Frankie Negrón represented the Puerto Rican rhythm, while the typical merengue artist Jomar Rodríguez, known as “El de las Notas,” got the Dominican delegation dancing.

  • Dominican Team: Jay Ramírez, Mr. Nueva Yol, Splou Yorkcity, Iván Manito (César Castillo), Tommy 5000 and DavinciBeau.
  • Puerto Rican Team: Ken Starrrz, Joselito Da Puppet, Sofsdope (Sofía Negrón), Willie Sweets, Fordhamoney and Ed Rodríguez.

The event was hosted by Chris Grant, and also featured special appearances by English-language comedy figures such as Baby Daddy of Comedy, Fat Magic, and Nemo -The Curl Plug.

I have been here for 14 years and I have probably attended a thousand events at the United Palace. This has been the best one of all.

Mike Fitelson, CEO of the United Palace Theater

Recognition for a new generation

The highlight of the night occurred when guest presenters, Radel Ortiz and actress Dascha Polanco, invited Mike Fitelson, CEO of the theater, to the stage. The executive presented an official recognition to the cast for the “sold out” show, highlighting that many of these artists began by performing in the theater’s lobby for barely a hundred people.

Fitelson underscored the importance of this milestone for independent talent, noting that the show’s success demonstrates how Latino humor is conquering major American stages. By developing content in English without renouncing their roots, this new generation of comedians has managed to break barriers and pave their way in an industry that had historically been dominated by Anglo-Saxon figures.

With this second edition, the “DR vs PR Comedy Show” not only reaffirms its commercial success, but also establishes itself as a vital platform for the growth of emerging talent, demonstrating that the Latino identity has a privileged place in the New York cultural scene.
