Dominican Republic reaches historic milestones in educational coverage and social equity
The Dominican Republic has consolidated significant progress in its education system over the last decade. According to data from the UNESCO Global Education Monitoring (GEM 2026) report, the country reached 93% coverage in early childhood education in 2024, one year prior to entering primary school. This figure marks a significant jump from the 86% recorded in 2015, reflecting an inclusive expansion of state services in critical formative stages.
Regional leadership in access and equity
The report highlights that the nation has not only expanded its reach, but has also managed to eliminate the wealth gap in access to pre-primary education. This achievement places the country on the same level as regional powers such as Brazil (93%) and very close to Argentina (94%), far surpassing other Latin American economies such as Panama, Paraguay, El Salvador, and Honduras.

UNESCO’s analysis underscores the importance of redoubling efforts to improve the quality of learning in fundamental competencies, specifically in reading and mathematics within basic primary levels.
These challenges are part of the national strategy to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 4) by 2030. The current administration reaffirms its commitment to prioritizing public investment in early childhood, ensuring that the country’s socioeconomic development has a solid foundation in Dominican classrooms.
