Dominican Republic extends its dominance in the NORCECA U-23 Pan American Cup
The Dominican Republic women’s U-23 volleyball team continues to demonstrate its hierarchy in the NORCECA Pan American Cup, achieving a resounding 3-0 victory against Mexico in its second appearance. With set scores of 25-17, 25-21, and 29-27, the Quisqueyan team maintains its undefeated 2-0 record in the tournament being held in Managua, Nicaragua.
The Dominican team prevailed in the fundamental aspects of the game, leading in attacks with a record of 44-36 and dominating the net with six blocks compared to four from the Mexicans. Although Mexico achieved a slight advantage in serving, their 24 unforced errors ended up weighing on the final score, facilitating the path for the Caribbean team.
Character and responsiveness
The match presented significant challenges for the Dominicans, especially in the second set. After a sweeping start by Mexico that led 10-3, the reaction from the locals was immediate. Led by Katielle Alonzo, who scored eight of her 17 points in that set, and the offensive support of Alondra Tapia, the Dominicans managed to come back to seal it 25-21.
The third set was a test of endurance. Although the Dominican Republic took an early 10-3 lead, Mexico forced a dramatic finish that extended to 29 points. Finally, an ace by Alanae Margaritha sealed the match in favor of the Dominicans.
As I always say, we take it game by game, we prepare for each match one at a time, and today we achieved an important victory against a good team from Mexico. I think that at times there was nervousness, we lacked calm and concentration, but these are things we must improve because there are also complicated games coming up, like tomorrow’s against the United States.

Regarding her performance, captain Alondra Tapia highlighted the importance of taking on the veteran role on the team. “I feel very satisfied to contribute to the team. The truth is, it is a responsibility that I carry on my shoulders right now; obviously, I am one of the older players and I must try to give my best and continue doing the best I can,” expressed the star player.
With this result, the Dominican Republic prepares for a crucial duel against the United States, another of the teams that arrives undefeated at this stage. The match is scheduled for 3:00 in the afternoon, marking a litmus test for the Dominicans’ aspirations in their quest for the top of the standings.
