The Dominican basketball team achieved a high-impact victory at the Nilson Nelson Gymnasium in Brasilia, after defeating the Brazilian team 94-90 in the start of the second phase of the qualifiers for the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup. The tricolor triumph was marked by a stellar performance from their pair of guards, Jean Montero and Andrés Feliz.
Montero emerged as the main offensive figure by recording 30 points, while Feliz completed a well-rounded day with 24 points, eight assists, and four rebounds. Thanks to this result, the team led by Néstor “Che” García improves its record to 5-2, also breaking the undefeated streak that the Brazilian team held in the competition.
A comeback of character
The match was a test of resilience for the national team. After finishing the first half with an adverse score of 58-50, the Dominicans adjusted their defense and their pace of play to dominate the third quarter 25-14. This change in intensity allowed the Quisqueyanos to enter the final quarter with a 75-72 lead, which they managed to defend until the final whistle in front of a crowded local audience.
Bench depth and interior play were also fundamental. Joel Soriano stood out with 13 points and nine rebounds, while David Jones and Andersson Garcia provided the necessary energy at critical moments of the match.
