Francisco Domínguez Brito clarifies the lifting of the judicial record for Santiago Matías
The former Attorney General of the Republic, Francisco Domínguez Brito, recently referred to the controversy regarding the lifting of a judicial record that was held against businessman and communicator Santiago Matías. During his intervention on the radio show Una Nueva Mañana, the political leader distanced the decision from any type of favor or interest of a political nature.
Domínguez Brito emphasized that, at the time the legal process took place, Santiago Matías was a young man living in the Capotillo sector who did not yet have the media prominence he holds today. According to the former official, this action was part of his constant work with young people from vulnerable communities.
The stigmatization of poverty as the core of the debate
The former attorney general argued that, during his tenure, he conducted studies that revealed an alarming reality: nearly 90% of young people from working-class sectors like Capotillo had been detained in police operations. Domínguez Brito described this practice as a form of stigmatization of poverty, where detentions were frequently resolved through the payment of small sums of money to obtain freedom.
I assume with great responsibility that I complied with a sentence and that I did the right thing.
Francisco Domínguez Brito
When questioned about the specific details of the case, the politician maintained that his actions were limited to executing a sentence issued by a court, which formally ordered the lifting of the file. He reiterated that, far from being an act of favoritism, it was a strict compliance with the judicial mandate in force at that time.
Responsibility and track record
- The former attorney general admitted to having forged a friendship with Matías years after the legal event.
- He reaffirmed that he assumes full responsibility for each of the decisions made during his tenure at the head of the Attorney General’s Office.
- He expressed his best wishes for the communicator’s success, urging him to maintain the necessary discernment to differentiate between correct actions and those that deviate from ethics.
Finally, Domínguez Brito settled the matter by insisting that, at the time of the events, the link of public notoriety that characterizes the figure of Santiago Matías today did not exist, thus refuting any theory that suggests a political benefit derived from this legal management.
