The recent wave of clashes between alleged criminals and National Police officers has sparked an intense debate in Dominican society. Faced with the increase in criminal acts, the citizenry is divided between those who advocate for a forceful police response and those who demand strict adherence to due process and justice.
Voices in favor of a firm hand
For a significant portion of the population, insecurity has reached critical levels that justify the use of force. Citizens like Evangelista Rivera, known as El Chino, maintain that the authorities must act firmly to protect hardworking citizens. In the same vein, others consulted expressed that, given the constant fear of going out into the streets and not returning alive, police action is a necessary measure to safeguard the integrity of families.

In contrast, there is a position that emphasizes the importance of human rights and institutionalism. Miguelina Pérez, one of the citizens consulted, argued that, regardless of the crimes committed, suspects must be captured and brought before the courts. According to this point of view, the State should focus on strengthening the judicial system, implementing education programs, and ensuring that sentences are properly served in prisons.
