DIDA prevents millions in improper charges in the health sector during August
The General Directorate of Information and Defense of Social Security Affiliates (DIDA) reported that, during the month of August 2026, its advocacy efforts succeeded in preventing system users and their families from paying out more than 18.5 million pesos. This amount corresponds to improper charges and payment requests detected in various private health centers in the country.
Actions against unauthorized charges
The entity’s interventions focused on recurring complaints that affect citizens’ pockets. Among the irregularities detected by Alofoke Deportes are:
- Additional charges for non-stipulated medical fees.
- Requirement of advance deposits to receive emergency care.
- Unjustified cost differences in services covered by the Family Health Insurance.
- Denial of coverage and irregular retention of patients or corpses.
Our goal is not to create a confrontation between the actors in the system. What we defend is a simple principle: the affiliate must receive the benefits to which they are entitled and cannot become the party that ends up paying for the differences or controversies that should be resolved between the other actors in the system.
Elías Báez, Director General of the DIDA
Success story: Significant savings for an affiliate
One of the most relevant cases handled in August involved a patient who, after undergoing surgery, received a surprise bill for 170,000 pesos. Despite having basic and supplementary coverage, the medical center claimed that certain procedures were not covered. After the intervention of the DIDA, it was verified that said services were an integral part of the main surgery, ensuring that the affiliate did not have to assume that unjustified payment.
Commitment to transparency
Elías Báez clarified that these bad practices do not represent all healthcare providers, most of whom operate under the established regulations. However, he emphasized that the institution will maintain strict vigilance to protect users from any abuse.
The DIDA reminded the population that the processes of medical glosses and audits are administrative matters between the ARS and health centers, so under no circumstances should they be passed on as an additional cost to the patient.
