Changes in the dugout: Dan Wilson will not continue at the helm of the Seattle Mariners

The Seattle Mariners organization has confirmed that Dan Wilson will not continue as the team’s manager for the 2027 season. The announcement was made this Sunday, just before the final game of the regular season, during an internal meeting with the players and coaching staff.

The news was released hours before Seattle closed its participation with a 7-3 victory over the Los Angeles Angels. While significant adjustments to the coaching staff are anticipated, internal reports suggest that key figures such as the director of pitching strategy, Trent Blank, and pitching coach, Pete Woodworth, would maintain their positions within the club’s structure.

A season marked by inconsistency

The Mariners’ performance in 2026 was far from the projected goals. The team concluded the season with a negative record, sitting more than 10 games below the .500 mark and occupying third place in the American League West Division.

Despite having started the year as one of the favorites to lead their division, the team faced various obstacles that undermined their aspirations:

  • An offensive performance below expectations.
  • Consistency difficulties in the starting pitcher rotation.
  • A bullpen that showed significant wear during the second half of the schedule.
  • Deficiencies in the defensive aspect.

Although the results were not as expected, the board has made it clear that the restructuring process seeks to give the organization a new direction after two seasons of learning under Wilson’s leadership.

The future of organization

Wilson’s departure marks the end of a cycle that began in August 2024, when he took over the position replacing Scott Servais. This period represented his first experience as a full-time manager in professional baseball.

With an eye toward the 2027 season, Seattle’s management, led by President of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto and General Manager Justin Hollander, is preparing to begin the search for new leadership. Both executives are expected to hold a press conference in the coming days to detail the rebuilding plans and the team’s vision for the immediate future.
