Prison modernization advances: Construction of the CCR Neiba in Bahoruco begins
The Ministry of Housing, Habitat and Buildings (MIVHED) officially began the construction of the Correction and Rehabilitation Center (CCR) in Neiba, in the Bahoruco province. This project represents the ninth of the ten penitentiary centers promised by President Luis Abinader for the year 2026, marking a firm step in the transformation of the Dominican prison system.
With this project, the Government is just one step away from meeting the established goal of ten new facilities. So far, construction work is progressing in various provinces, including Azua, El Seibo, Hato Mayor, Santiago Rodríguez, Sánchez Ramírez, Monseñor Nouel, Peravia, and Barahona.
Today we are launching the ninth of the ten centers that President Luis Abinader announced for this year. We have Pedernales left, and with that start, we will be completing this path that we undertook as a Government to continue leaving behind infrastructure that no longer responds to the penitentiary model that the country needs.

Work details and capacity
The new CCR Neiba is projected as a modern and functional facility, designed to foster real rehabilitation. The main features of the project include:
- Investment: More than RD$335 million.
- Capacity: Space for 400 inmates.
- Extension: Construction on a 63,000 square meter plot, with a built area of 14,074.67 m².
- Infrastructure: Includes administrative buildings, medium-security cells, library, dining halls, and conjugal cells.
- Training: Areas dedicated to technical training, agriculture, farming, and educational classrooms to ensure social reintegration.
- Sports facilities and security: Two sports courts, eight watchtowers, guard booths, and 97 parking spaces.
The governor of Bahoruco, María Esther Díaz Medina, highlighted the positive impact of this project for the province, emphasizing that it will allow the families of those deprived of liberty to have access to the center without the need for strenuous travel, thus strengthening family ties during the correction process.
The MIVHED reaffirms its commitment to creating environments that guarantee human dignity and provide effective tools for inmates to reintegrate into society with new skills after fulfilling their responsibilities to justice.
