Colombia on maximum alert: Rescue efforts continue after devastating earthquake
Colombia is facing one of the most significant natural tragedies of the current century following the 7.4 magnitude earthquake that shook various regions of the country this Monday. The epicenter, located in San José del Palmar, Chocó, at a depth of 103 kilometers, has left a trail of destruction that keeps authorities in a race against time to rescue survivors and assist thousands of victims.
Victim toll and critical areas
Although official figures continue to be consolidated, the preliminary toll indicates at least 240 deaths. The impact has been devastating in several departments, with Cali being the most affected area with 95 fatalities, followed by Risaralda with 90, Valle del Cauca with 35, Chocó with 14, and Caldas with six. The national government, led by President Abelardo de la Espriella, has set up a unified command post to coordinate the immediate response to the emergency.
Government actions and infrastructure damage
President De la Espriella has visited the cities of Pereira, Manizales, and Dosquebradas to oversee recovery efforts. In Manizales, the president confirmed the implementation of rental subsidies for approximately 1,150 families who lost their homes, a measure projected to be replicated in Risaralda. Meanwhile, the Matecaña International Airport in Pereira remains under technical evaluation, limiting its operations exclusively to emergency flights, humanitarian aid, and medical transfers.
International and national solidarity has been fundamental in these first hours. From the shipment of tons of food by the Bogota Food Bank to the logistical support coming from El Salvador and organizations in South Florida, the country is working together to mitigate the impact of this catastrophe.
Stories of hope and sports solidarity
Amidst the rubble, hope persists. Rescue teams managed to save Diana Troncoso, a 31-year-old biomedical scientist, in the Torres del Limonar sector of Cali, after she remained trapped for hours under a collapsed structure. These types of rescues keep faith alive in the midst of the crisis.
The world of sports has also expressed its support. Colombian footballer Jhon Arias is leading a personal initiative to send medical supplies and healthcare personnel to his hometown, Quibdó. Likewise, figures such as Lamine Yamal and clubs of the stature of Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and Chapecoense, along with world leaders and Pope Leo XIV, have extended their condolences to the Colombian people in the face of the magnitude of the disaster.
