Crisis in the healthcare system: CMD denounces lack of capacity and corruption in public management

The president of the Dominican Medical Association (CMD), Luis Peña Núñez, has raised his voice to point out the critical deficiencies that the national health system is going through. During a recent public intervention, the physician was emphatic in identifying the mismanagement of resources and the lack of suitability of officials as the main obstacles to providing a dignified service to the population.

I think it is the spending, the efficiency in spending, and that a lot is stolen in this country and that nothing happens to the thieves.

Luis Peña Núñez, president of the CMD

For Peña Núñez, the problem transcends the lack of budget and focuses on the quality of leadership imposed in health institutions. According to his analysis, the system suffers the consequences of placing people without the necessary academic preparation or technical capacity to manage hospital centers or health directorates.

Questioning management capacity

The union leader was critical regarding the criteria used to appoint sector executives, arguing that the lack of professional competence prevents efficient hospital management. Among the points highlighted by the CMD president are:

  • The urgent need to audit the efficiency of public health spending.
  • The appointment of personnel without adequate training for strategic positions.
  • Impunity regarding the irregular management of funds allocated to the health sector.

The doctors’ representative concluded that, to transform the healthcare system, it is imperative to carry out a deep review of how management responsibilities are assigned, always prioritizing technical capacity over any other criterion. According to the CMD, public health requires leaders with the vision and preparation necessary to guarantee the well-being of the citizenry.
