CMD demands labor compliance and safety plan in Dominican hospitals

Dominican Medical Association demands greater hospital security and follow-up on labor agreements

The Dominican Medical Association (CMD) has reaffirmed its stance in defense of the rights of physicians in the country, demanding that the authorities strictly comply with the agreed-upon labor agreements. Through an official statement issued by its National Board of Directors, the union emphasized the need to supervise the 20-hour work week to ensure transparency and equity in job positions for the health sector.

Concern regarding the new Penal Code

In relation to the recent entry into force of the new Penal Code on August 3rd, the CMD remains in permanent session. The organization seeks to prevent certain regulatory provisions from encouraging so-called defensive medicine, a practice that, according to the guild, could deteriorate the quality of the doctor-patient relationship and generate legal uncertainty for professionals.

The guild works actively to achieve a harmonization of legal texts, preventing new regulations from infringing upon medical practice and protecting the integrity of the profession against potential legal risks.

The CMD positively valued the modification of articles 8, 104, and 354, highlighting President Luis Abinader’s commitment to form an advisory commission to evaluate the remaining articles that still generate concern in the sector.

Demand for a national security plan

One of the fundamental pillars of the current demands of the Medical Association is the urgent implementation of a national hospital security plan. According to the guild, it is imperative to guarantee the physical integrity of patients, healthcare personnel, and doctors in all health centers in the country, describing this measure as essential for the strengthening of the Dominican healthcare system.

Physician Week 2026

Finally, the guild announced the celebration of Doctor’s Week, scheduled from August 16 to 23. This event will feature a varied agenda that includes continuing education sessions on the impact of the Penal Code, a fair with credit facilities, and, as a novelty, a golf tournament designed for the integration of medical professionals.
