Cibao International Airport to double its operational capacity after multi-million dollar expansion
The Cibao International Airport is heading towards a historic transformation. During a recent inspection of the works, President Luis Abinader confirmed that the expansion project will allow for doubling the passenger capacity of the most important air terminal in the Northern region, which currently records a flow of 2.3 million travelers annually.
This infrastructure is considered a strategic pillar for Santiago and its surrounding areas, facilitating a vital connection with major international destinations, especially with the United States. According to authorities, this increase is necessary to support the boom in tourism, trade, and investments that continue to boost the Cibao economy.
This is a work of great importance for the entire Northern region, because it will allow doubling the number of passengers currently transported through this airport.

Technical details and delivery projections
The first phase of this ambitious project has an investment exceeding 200 million dollars. Teófilo Gómez, general manager of the Cibao International Airport, detailed that the gray work and the structure show significant progress of 90%, which positions the work within the established schedule.
According to official estimates, the completion of this stage is scheduled for mid-2027. This progress will not only modernize the facilities but will also consolidate the terminal as a key air connection point for regional development.
Institutional support
The president’s visit was attended by members of the airport’s Board of Directors, including Ricardo Fondeur, Ricardo Brugal, and José Armando Bermúdez. Likewise, key officials from the aeronautical and government sectors participated, including:
- Igor Rodríguez Durán, General Director of the IDAC.
- Mérido Torres Espinal, Executive Director of the Airport Department.
- Brigadier General Pilot Manuel Abad García Lithgow, Director of the CESAC.
- Rosa Santos, Governor of Santiago.
- Andrés Cueto, General Director of Coraasan.
