Consorcio Azucarero Central marks a historic milestone in its sugar production
The Central Sugar Consortium (CAC) has consolidated a stage of unprecedented success by setting a new production record during the 2025-2026 harvest. The company managed to harvest 748 thousand tons of its own sugarcane, reaching a historic figure of 81 thousand 124 tons of cream sugar, an achievement that marks a turning point in the region’s sugar emporium.
José Antonio García, administrative manager of the CAC, highlighted that industrial performance stood at a solid 10.85%. According to the executive, these results are the direct fruit of a constant investment strategy focused on the modernization of its operational processes.
The harvest of 748 thousand tons of sugarcane on our farms is something that we, as a company, had set out to achieve with modern investments, such as the mechanization of sugarcane cutting, drip irrigation of the sugarcane fields, and the new planting we do in our fields as soon as the sugarcane is cut.

Economic engine and leading employer in the South
Beyond production figures, the social impact of the CAC in the Enriquillo region and the provinces of Barahona, Bahoruco, and Independencia is decisive. The company remains the largest employer in the Dominican South, sustaining a workforce of more than 3,200 direct employees, the vast majority of whom reside in communities near its operations.
- Labor impact: The CAC contributes nearly 15% of the registered jobs in its area of influence.
- Local talent: 71% of the 1,850 employees in the Southern region are natives of the Barahona province.
- Economic engine: The company’s annual payroll amounts to RD$1.04 billion, which represents approximately 30% of the provincial wage bill.
- Value chain: 83% of the suppliers working with the consortium are local, boosting commerce from small businesses to specialized services.
Bet on training and the future
With an eye on the upcoming 2026-2027 harvest, the CAC aims to increase harvest mechanization to 75%. Aware that the industry demands new technical profiles, the company, through the Central Barahona Foundation, has sealed a strategic alliance with INFOTEP.
This technical training program has benefited more than 4,282 people in the Enriquillo region, certifying hundreds of young people in areas such as mechanics, computer science, welding, nursing, and industrial management. This initiative not only seeks to improve the consortium’s operational efficiency, but also to ensure that young talent in the sugarcane areas has the necessary skills to integrate into the modern labor market.
