World boxing in mourning: Legend Wilfredo “Bazooka” Gómez passes away

International sports are in mourning following the confirmation of the passing of Wilfredo “Bazooka” Gómez, one of the most iconic and respected figures in the history of Puerto Rican boxing. The legendary fighter lost his life on the night of Saturday, October 10, at 69 years of age, after remaining hospitalized for two weeks due to health complications.

The news was confirmed by his son, Wilfredo Gómez Jr., who detailed that the passing occurred around 9:00 at night. Although the former champion had been initially admitted due to respiratory difficulties, the family has not yet made the exact causes of his passing official.

A career marked by power and glory

Born on October 29, 1956, in San Juan, “El Niño de Las Monjas” left an indelible mark in the ring. His dominance was such that he managed to become a world champion in three different divisions: super bantamweight, featherweight, and super featherweight. His path to success began in the amateur ranks, standing out at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games and winning the gold medal at the 1974 World Amateur Boxing Championships in Havana.

As a professional, his punching power was his hallmark, achieving a historic streak of 17 consecutive world title defenses by knockout. Among his most memorable milestones are:

  • The triumph over the Mexican Carlos Zárate in 1978, consolidating his dominance against an undefeated fighter.
  • The historic battle against Salvador Sánchez in 1981, a duel that defined the boxing rivalry between Puerto Rico and Mexico.
  • His technical knockout victory against Lupe Pintor in 1982.
  • The conquest of the featherweight (1984) and super featherweight (1985) titles.

Wilfredo Gómez closed his successful career with an impressive record of 44 victories, 42 of them by knockout, totaling only three losses and one draw.

An eternal legacy in the Hall of Fame

Gómez’s impact transcended the results. In 1995, his name was immortalized by being inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. Years later, in 2018, the World Boxing Organization (WBO) granted him the distinction of honorary champion, celebrating his incalculable contribution to pugilism.

Alofoke Deportes joins in the grief that burdens the family of the legendary champion, whose legacy will continue to inspire new generations of boxers seeking to achieve greatness under the lights of the ring. It is expected that in the coming days his loved ones will provide more information regarding the posthumous services.
