New York commemorates the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks
New York City came to a standstill this Friday to honor the memory of the victims of the September 11 attacks, in a solemn ceremony that marked 25 years since that tragic event. The event, held at the site where the Twin Towers once stood, brought together prominent figures of American politics to pay tribute to those who lost their lives.
Among the notable attendees were former presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Joe Biden. Joining them were personalities such as former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former First Lady Michelle Obama, Vice President JD Vance, New York Governor Kathy Hochul, and city council member Zohran Mamdani. Also present were key figures such as Rudy Giuliani, who led the mayor’s office during the attacks, and former mayor Bill de Blasio.
Donald Trump’s absence in the Big Apple
One of the most discussed notes of the day was the absence of the current president, Donald Trump, at the New York ceremony. In an unusual decision for a U.S. president, Trump opted to attend the commemorative event held at the Pentagon, Virginia, the place where one of the hijacked planes crashed, claiming the lives of 184 people.
The official ceremony began at 8:46 in the morning, coinciding with the impact of the first plane against the north tower. After the performance of the national anthem, the names of the deceased were read and moments of silence were observed in memory of the victims.
A legacy of memory and reflection
The day was marked by deep emotion. Numerous relatives of the victims gathered around the Memorial carrying photographs of their loved ones. The commemoration not only remembered those who perished that day, but also the victims of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing and the thousands of people who have since passed away due to illnesses resulting from exposure to toxic debris following the collapse of the towers.
The program of events also includes the projection of columns of light from the Oculus and the switching on of artificial light beams that will illuminate the New York sky at nightfall, a symbol of resilience that has become a tradition to honor the legacy of the fallen.
