Belgian fugitive wanted for drug trafficking and violence captured in Cartagena
In a major international cooperation operation, Colombian authorities managed to capture Alec Louis Leonora Van Regenmortel in Cartagena, a Belgian citizen who was actively sought by the justice system of his country. The detainee was subject to an Interpol red notice due to his alleged involvement in high-impact crimes.
The operation was carried out by the Criminal Investigation and Interpol Directorate (Dijín) of the National Police, with the fundamental support of Migration Colombia. According to official reports, the detainee is linked to a criminal network dedicated to the transnational trafficking of illicit substances, including cocaine, ecstasy, and cannabis, activities he allegedly carried out between 2020 and 2024.
A history marked by violence
Beyond his activities in the world of drug trafficking, Van Regenmortel is accused of participating in a violent incident that occurred in February 2021 in the city of Antwerp, Belgium. According to investigations, the subject allegedly attacked a person using a bladed weapon and subsequently shot him twice in his lower extremities.
The authorities have confirmed that, during previous operations carried out in Belgium, they managed to seize firearms, ammunition, electroshock devices, and drug shipments that were being transported in vehicles with hidden compartments.
Extradition process in progress
The location of the European citizen was possible thanks to the exchange of intelligence information and the strict migration controls implemented at the points of entry into the national territory. After his arrest was carried out in Cartagena, the individual was placed at the disposal of the International Affairs Directorate of the Office of the Attorney General of the Nation.
