Man dies after confrontation with DICRIM agents in Santiago

A man identified as José Ignacio Rodríguez, 48, lost his life following an alleged exchange of gunfire with members of the Central Directorate of Investigation (DICRIM) in the Pastor Bella Vista sector, located in Santiago de los Caballeros.

According to the official report issued by the National Police, the deceased, popularly known as “Ignacio,” was actively sought by the authorities due to multiple outstanding arrest warrants. He was directly linked to a network dedicated to vehicle theft and had a criminal record that included eight previous police entries.

Details of the police operation

The event took place during an intelligence operation deployed to locate his whereabouts. According to the agents’ version, Rodríguez reacted violently upon noticing the police presence, opening fire on the officers, who were forced to repel the aggression. After being seriously wounded, he was rushed to a hospital, where the doctors on duty confirmed his death shortly after.

The authorities are keeping the precise circumstances under which the alleged exchange of gunfire occurred under investigation, while the body was sent to the National Institute of Forensic Sciences (INACIF) for legal examinations.

Collected evidence

After conducting the survey at the scene, the Scientific Police managed to collect elements that are part of the investigative process:

  • A .38 caliber revolver with one spent casing.
  • A shell casing of the same caliber found at the scene.
  • A gray Toyota Corolla vehicle, which had been reported stolen and is linked to the illicit activities attributed to the deceased.

The law enforcement institution continues with the investigations to clarify all the details of the confrontation and determine possible additional links of Rodríguez to other criminal acts in the region.
