General Debate of the 81st UN General Assembly Begins in New York
The United Nations headquarters in New York became the epicenter of global diplomacy this Tuesday, September 22, as it formally kicked off the General Debate of its 81st Assembly. The event, which will run until September 28, brings together heads of State and Government from various nations to present their positions and priorities to the international community.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres opened the session by presenting the annual report on the organization’s activities. For his part, the presidency of this edition of the Assembly falls to the representative of Bangladesh, Khalilur Rahman.
Leadership and global issues on the agenda
Following diplomatic tradition, Brazil inaugurated the series of presentations with a speech by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, followed by the President of the United States, Donald Trump, in his capacity as host country. The 81st session is being held under the theme: “Restoring trust, managing transformation: a United Nations that delivers for everyone”.
The High-Level Week will serve as a platform to address critical challenges, such as international peace and security, the impact of climate change, advances in artificial intelligence, and the promotion of sustainable development.
In this edition, the participation of the British Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, stands out, as he makes his debut on this international stage after having taken office last July.
Expectations regarding the Dominican Republic’s participation
For the Dominican delegation, the focal point will be the address by President Luis Abinader. According to the official agenda, the Dominican leader will take the podium at the Assembly this Wednesday, September 23, after the midday session.
Abinader’s visit to New York is part of an exhaustive work agenda that, beyond his speech, includes:

- Meetings focused on international cooperation.
- Promotion of investment and trade for the Dominican Republic.
- Debates on the role of artificial intelligence in national development.
