Abadina announces U14 tournament with 40 teams for its 63rd anniversary
The National District Basketball Association (Abadina) has made official the celebration of its U14 tournament, in both the male and female divisions, to commemorate its 63rd anniversary. This important sporting event will feature the participation of 40 teams, reaffirming the institution’s commitment to the development of basketball in youth categories.
The announcement was made by Edwin Castillo (Tatico), president of the entity, who highlighted the positive impact this tournament has for athletes between 13 and 14 years old. The competition is a central part of the commemorative activities for the founding of Abadina, which took place on September 4, 1963.
Inauguration details
The opening ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, September 5th at 4:00 in the afternoon. The event will take place at an iconic location: in front of the bust of Don Virgilio Travieso Soto, located on the front esplanade of the Arena BanReservas, within the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center.
This tournament represents a fundamental pillar in our mission to foster young talent and celebrate more than six decades of basketball history in the National District.

Dedication and technical coordination
The 2026 edition of the U14 tournament will be dedicated to the National Youth Basketball Teams Project, an initiative led by the Dominican Basketball Federation under the management of engineer Rafael Uribe.
The technical direction of the event will feature a top-tier team, ensuring excellence in the development of the matches. The executive coordination will be in charge of prominent figures of Dominican basketball:
- José “Maíta” Mercedes, Dominican Sports Immortal.
- Melvyn López, renowned strategist.
- A select group of national coaches who will work on the development of the young athletes.
With this event, Alofoke Deportes continues to follow up on the growth of grassroots basketball in the Dominican Republic, highlighting the efforts of institutions to keep the country’s sporting legacy alive.
