Hayden Alvarez is the first overall pick of the 2026 LIDOM Rookie Draft by the Tigres del Licey

The 2026 Rookie Draft of the Dominican Professional Baseball League (LIDOM) has concluded with a historic day for the Tigres del Licey, who secured the rights to the talented outfielder Hayden Álvarez as the first overall pick of the event.

Álvarez, a 19-year-old prospect from Bonao belonging to the Los Angeles Angels organization, joins a select group of players who have held the first pick in the blue team’s history since the implementation of the draft in 2002. With a 685,000 dollar signing bonus in the 2024 international market, the young outfielder stands out for his athletic abilities, his speed on the bases, and his solid defense, factors that position him as a key piece for the future of the capital city franchise.

Young talent reinforcing winter ball

The first round of the draft made clear the teams’ commitment to strengthening their reserves with prospects who are currently shining in organized baseball in the United States. The moves in the initial selection were as follows:

  • Tigres del Licey: Hayden Alvarez (Los Angeles Angels)
  • Estrellas Orientales: Ronny Cruz (Washington Nationals)
  • Leones del Escogido: Elian Pena (New York Mets)
  • Gigantes del Cibao: Dauri Fernandez (Cleveland Guardians)
  • Toros del Este: Yairo Padilla (St. Louis Cardinals)
  • Aguilas Cibaeñas: Luis Reyson De la Cruz (Cleveland Guardians)

Continuity in the Draft

After the initial round, the teams continued selecting talent in a process that extended until the ninth round. Among the players selected in this stretch, figures such as Estalin Ortiz and Waner Luciano for Licey stand out, as well as Isaías Uribe and Hansel Gabriel Rincón for the Estrellas Orientales. The Leones del Escogido added José de Jesús Mejía and Emilio José Obispo, while the Gigantes del Cibao opted for José Ledesma and Juan Mateo.

For their part, the Toros del Este added Junior Ciprián, Luimy Muñoz, and Carlos Caro to their reserve list. Finally, the Águilas Cibaeñas reinforced their roster with Luis Enrique Peña and Romeli Espinosa. This event reaffirms the role of the Rookie Draft as the primary platform for LIDOM franchises to secure the generational transition of Dominican baseball.

The 2026 Rookie Draft represents the commitment of the six franchises to the development of local young talent, ensuring that future Major League stars maintain their connection to our winter baseball.
