DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Connor Zilisch, visibly emotional, shared a touching moment at Daytona International Speedway. After composing himself, Zilisch, moved to tears, used his shirt to wipe his face. The scene marked an anticipated announcement in the world of motorsports. The promotion of Zilisch, a 19-year-old prodigy, to the Cup Series circuit for 2026 was an open secret in NASCAR. Trackhouse Racing owner Justin Marks joked that the news “wouldn’t surprise anyone”. Marks confirmed the signing of a multi-year contract with Zilisch to compete full-time next year. Zilisch will take Daniel Suarez’s place in a Chevrolet with no number yet and will join Ross Chastain and Shane van Gisbergen, making up Marks’ three-car team.
Zilisch recalled moments when he doubted his path, questioning his decision to leave school and his friends to pursue his dream in motorsports. He acknowledged that, five years ago, he contemplated a more conventional life. His parents, visibly moved, witnessed the moment. Zilisch’s father highlighted his son’s unusual emotionality, known for his stoic character. Zilisch’s career in motorsport includes a prominent participation in karting, even in Europe at the age of 11.
