Logano, king of the NASCAR playoffs, defends the controversial format
NASCAR driver Joey Logano especially enjoys the end of August, as it marks the start of the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs, his favorite time of the year. Despite admitting that it’s “the most exhausting, perhaps the most unpleasant moment of the year”, Logano acknowledges that it’s when the greatest rewards are obtained and it’s shown what he and his team are made of.

It’s the moment when you have the opportunity to do something great.

Logano, a three-time Cup Series champion, has managed to embrace the postseason. His first title came in 2018 and the second in 2022. The third championship, last year, placed him alongside legends like Cale Yarborough, David Pearson, Lee Petty, Darrell Waltrip, and Tony Stewart. Now, the driver of the No. 22 Ford Mustang from Team Penske, aims for his fourth title, which would place him in an even more select group, alongside Jeff Gordon.

Four would be incredible. Three was definitely special.

The only drivers with more titles in the Cup Series are Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt, and Jimmie Johnson, all with seven championships. Logano, although he wasn’t the most dominant driver in the regular season, with only one victory, has demonstrated his ability to perform at his best in crucial moments. His team, known for its experience and perseverance, has repeatedly shown its ability to excel when others underestimate them.

Logano is optimistic about his team’s possibilities, highlighting that they are in a comparable position to the previous year. Furthermore, he praised Team Penske for its ability to rise to the occasion.

I think we’re really close to where we need to be.

In the elimination era, from 2014 to the present, Logano shares the record with Denny Hamlin for most appearances in the Round of 8 (nine) and leads all drivers with the most participations in the Championship 4 (six). With three championships, Logano is the active driver with the most titles in the Cup Series and leads all active drivers with 15 playoff wins. Logano supports NASCAR’s playoff format, considering it exciting, and is part of the NASCAR committee that analyzes potential future changes, such as the points structure and eliminations.

I think there are ways we can simplify it a bit.

Logano defends the emotion that the playoff format brings, with its “win or go home” moments, and is ready to be a protagonist again in the next two months.
