Sanction for Carson Hocevar for Comments about Mexico

Spire Motorsports has fined Carson Hocevar $50,000 following derogatory comments he made about Mexico City during a live stream, coinciding with the recent NASCAR race in the Mexican capital. Hocevar, 22 years old, publicly apologized on Sunday night, admitting that his words were the product of his ignorance, as it was the first time he had visited Mexico and he was influenced by previous negative information.

I am ashamed of my comments.

In addition to the financial penalty, Spire Motorsports has ordered Hocevar to participate in a cultural sensitivity and bias awareness training program. The sum of $50,000 will be donated in equal parts to three organizations that provide support to Mexican communities:
  • Mexican Red Cross.
  • Un Kilo de Ayuda, a non-profit organization that fights child malnutrition and supports early childhood development in rural communities.
  • Fondo Unido México (United Way Mexico), which funds local NGOs that improve education, health, and housing in 22 Mexican states.
Spire Motorsports issued a statement highlighting the importance of respect, a fundamental value for the team. The statement emphasized that Hocevar’s words do not reflect the values of the organization, its partners, or NASCAR.

These actions are consistent with Spire Motorsports’ core value, RESPECT, which is something we proudly display on every race car, team uniform, hauler, and digital channel. Respect is not a slogan. It is a daily expectation that we “walk the walk” in the way we speak, compete, and serve the communities that welcome our sport.
