The driver, after exiting car number 23, couldn’t hide his emotion as he savored this triumph on the 2.5-mile oval of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. This victory is especially notable, as it makes him the first African-American driver to win a major race on this circuit. Wallace, 31, overcame a series of challenges, including a rain delay and two exciting extensions. In addition, he faced the pressure of competing against defending champion Kyle Larson.

“This victory is truly special,” Wallace said.

This victory represents Wallace’s third career win in the NASCAR Cup Series, and it’s his first in one of the series’ most prestigious events, joining the Daytona 500, the Coca-Cola 600, and the Southern 500. Furthermore, it ends a 100-race winless streak dating back to 2022. Wallace’s strategy during the restarts was key. In the first one, he managed to overtake Larson, although an accident forced a second extension. Wallace demonstrated his determination. “I wanted to win this race straight up. I wanted to get back to racing,” Wallace said. Wallace’s triumph also served to compensate for Saturday’s frustration, when Chase Briscoe snatched the pole position from him in qualifying. This victory is a boost for the 23XI Racing team, co-owned by Basketball Hall of Famer Michael Jordan and Denny Hamlin, who is currently facing legal challenges. In the race, Ty Gibbs took the In-Season Challenge, surpassing Ty Dillon.
