Valentina Shevchenko Triumphs at UFC 322: Absolute Domination Over Zhang Weili

In a demonstration of power, Valentina Shevchenko defended her women’s flyweight title and established herself as the number one pound-for-pound in the world of mixed martial arts. The contest took place in the co-main event of UFC 322, held at Madison Square Garden. Shevchenko, with a masterful performance, defeated former strawweight champion Zhang Weili by unanimous decision. This victory allowed her to equal Amanda Nunes at the top of UFC history, with 11 wins in championship fights. The fight, billed as one of the most anticipated in the history of women’s MMA, did not have the expected parity. Shevchenko dominated each round, convincing the three judges with her performance.

“This is the art of martial arts. When there is an opponent who is super tough in her weight category against all the others, but when she is here, in front of me, she can’t do anything,” declared Shevchenko.

Shevchenko’s strategy was clear and effective. She neutralized Zhang’s offense, controlling the distance and executing precise takedowns. Her dominance extended both on the ground and in striking, where she connected kicks to the legs and body. According to UFC statistics, Shevchenko outstruck Zhang in total strikes (137-80) and completed 5 of 6 takedown attempts. Her control in the fight was notable, accumulating 13 minutes and 24 seconds of control time.

The future of Shevchenko in the flyweight division presents several interesting options. Natalia Silva, who is coming off a dominant victory over Alexa Grasso, and Erin Blanchfield, who submitted Tracy Cortez at the same event, are possible contenders. Additionally, bantamweight champion Kayla Harrison could be an intriguing rival. Harrison will defend her title against Nunes in 2026, and has already expressed interest in facing Shevchenko if she is victorious. Shevchenko has already competed at bantamweight and challenged Nunes for the title in 2016. For her part, Zhang Weili promised to come back strong, but has not defined whether she will remain at flyweight or return to strawweight.
