Valentina Shevchenko Conserves Herself at UFC 322: Absolute Domination over Zhang Weili

Valentina Shevchenko once again proved why she is considered the number one pound-for-pound in the world of women’s mixed martial arts, defending her flyweight title (125 pounds) with a unanimous decision victory over former strawweight champion Zhang Weili, in the co-main event of UFC 322 held at Madison Square Garden. Shevchenko, with this victory, equals the legend Amanda Nunes at the top of UFC history with 11 victories in title fights. The fight on Saturday promised to be one of the most momentous in the history of women’s MMA. However, Shevchenko dominated every round, convincing all three judges with her performance.

This is the art of martial arts. When there is an opponent who is very tough in her weight category against all others, but when she is here, in front of me, she can’t do anything.

Shevchenko, at 37 years old, displayed a clear superiority in all aspects of the fight, especially in grappling. She took Zhang down repeatedly, controlling her on the ground. She neutralized Zhang’s offense, controlling the distance and timing of her takedowns expertly. Although most of her work took place on the ground, she also managed to connect kicks to the legs and body.

I was prepared for the most difficult challenge. I knew I couldn’t trade blows with Weili; she has incredible striking power. That’s why I worked very hard and intelligently to use distance and wrestling.

Valentina Shevchenko dominó a Zhang Weili en su combate titular, superándola en golpes totales (137-80) y concretando cinco de sus seis intentos de derribo.
According to UFC statistics, Shevchenko outstruck Zhang in total strikes (137-80) and converted five of six takedown attempts. She only needed one takedown per round, as Zhang was unable to get back to her feet. Shevchenko accumulated 13:24 of control time, during which she was close to achieving the crucifix on multiple occasions. Shevchenko’s immediate future in the flyweight division is promising. Her most likely next opponent is Brazilian Natalia Silva, who is coming off a dominant decision victory over Alexa Grasso in May. Erin Blanchfield, who submitted Tracy Cortez at UFC 322 on Saturday, also presents a solid resume. However, the most intriguing situation could be the defending bantamweight champion, Kayla Harrison, who is expected to defend her title against Nunes in early 2026. Nunes is returning from retirement with the intention of regaining the belt she vacated in 2023. If Harrison wins, she has already expressed her interest in facing Shevchenko next. Shevchenko has already competed at bantamweight and even challenged Nunes for the 135-pound belt in 2016. Meanwhile, Zhang vowed to come back strong, but did not indicate whether he will stay at 125 pounds or return to 115.
